INTRODUCTION. - A KING IN COUNCIL.
CHAPTER I. - VILLENEUVE-L'ABBESSE.
CHAPTER II. - THE TOWER CHAMBER.
CHAPTER III. - STILL WATERS TROUBLED.
Set against the courtly turbulence of Henry IV’s France, the story follows Monsieur des Ageaux, a thirty‑something lieutenant appointed to govern the quiet province of Périgord. Though the era prizes flirtation and courtly intrigue as routes to power, des Ageaux shuns romance entirely, preferring the measured responsibilities of administration and the loyalty of his men. His reputation is that of a sober, almost austere figure—more a piece of furniture than a fashionable courtier—yet his competence has earned him a place on the king’s council.
When a summons brings him to the remote abbey of Vlaye, des Ageaux encounters the enigmatic Abbess, whose concealed motives disturb the fragile balance of his duties. As political tensions rise and the lives of soldiers and peasants intertwine, he must decide whether to remain the detached governor he has always been or to become entangled in the hidden passions and dangers that surround the sacred walls. The early chapters set a vivid stage for a tale of duty, loyalty, and the quiet storms that ripple beneath a still surface.
