Description

In the restless days that followed the first tremors of the French Revolution, a young marquis named de St Alais roams the shadowed courtyards of his family estate, where gardens have been moved and secrets hide behind high hedges. His sharp eyes and sardonic humor reveal a man caught between the fading privileges of the aristocracy and the unsettling new ideas of liberty and equality that swirl through the townsfolk’s chatter. The narrative opens with a tense conversation that hints at lingering loyalties and the uneasy balance of power in a world on the brink of upheaval.

The narrator, a close confidant of the marquis, feels the sting of past deeds and the weight of a burned carriage—an act that still burns in his memory. As de St Alais recounts his time in Paris and Versailles, old friendships and rivalries surface, and a simmering rivalry with a mysterious count looms. The stage is set for a clash of ideals, personal pride, and the looming specter of rebellion that will test loyalties and reshape lives.
