Summer Storms
On a sweltering July evening, Ruth McMurry closes her beloved little bookshop and savors the independence she has built for herself. After nearly a year in business, the store is more than a livelihood—it is a hard-won dream, and Ruth takes pride in every shelf, display, and carefully chosen book. But the heat, dust, and bustling streets cannot keep her from noticing that the ordinary evening may hold something unexpected.
Her interruption comes in the form of Allen, an old friend with a teasing smile and an invitation to dinner at the country club. As they leave the shop and drive through the noisy town, their easy banter hints at a familiar intimacy—and at subjects neither of them is quite ready to address. Beneath the humor, Ruth senses that Allen wants to discuss another girl, while his attention suggests their own relationship may be less settled than either admits. Warm, witty, and charged with the restless mood of an approaching storm, this story follows the dangerous weather of the heart.
