Description

The tale opens on a crowded autumn market in Turku, where farmers and townsfolk throng the narrow streets, hawking hemp, cloth, and dried meat under a sky heavy with the clatter of wagons and the cries of street performers. Amid the bustling stalls and colorful spectacles—a sword‑dancing woman who brandishes a blade with daring flair—a palpable tension simmers, hinting at the larger turmoil of the Nuijá war that looms over everyday life.

Into this vibrant tableau steps a young peasant girl, her eyes filled with both curiosity and fear, and a freshly commissioned officer whose gaze lingers on her like a promise. Their brief encounter unfolds against the backdrop of uneasy crowds, whispered superstitions about a witch‑like “noita‑akka,” and the stark divide between the land‑owning elite and the hard‑pressed countryside. As the market’s revelry gives way to growing unease, the two protagonists are drawn into a world where love, duty, and the looming conflict begin to shape their destinies.
