In a modest Finnish town that has just begun to outgrow its original plan, everyday life is painted with ordinary details. The streets wind over a low hill to a quiet bay where the city finally pauses, and each house owns a small yard with a water barrel, an empty dog‑kennel, and a garden of apple trees that never bloom, surrounded by tangled berry thickets and tall grass. A humble cottage stands between two birches, its rough wooden table still bright green from an old paint job.
The two‑storey municipal hall dominates the market square, its ground floor serving as a court and police station where constables deal cards of “Black Pekka” amid lingering smoke. Above, a tavern offers stronger drinks to town's patrons, though the air remains thick with tobacco. In winter the adjacent slope becomes a sledding track, marked only by a painted metal sign warning of a fine for reckless sliding—yet the boys ignore it, racing down with ice shards in hand. These vivid scenes set the tone for the quirky characters and subtle tensions that will emerge.
