Description

Founded in 1859 at a gathering called by the Lord Mayor, the London Rifle Brigade quickly grew into a formidable volunteer force, drawing men from the city’s wards and establishing a proud tradition of citizen‑soldiers. Its early years saw rapid expansion, the construction of a purpose‑built headquarters on Bunhill Row, and the appointment of distinguished honorary and commanding officers, including the Duke of Cambridge and the future Earl of Lucan. The regiment’s identity was shaped by a steadfast commitment to professional leadership and a deep connection to the civic heart of London.

By the turn of the century the Brigade had already earned a reputation for service abroad, contributing officers and men to the South African War and earning commendations for bravery and dedication. Throughout its pre‑war evolution the unit balanced civilian support with military rigor, relying on the generosity of its members and the city’s patronage to fund its facilities and activities. This concise history captures the spirit of a volunteer corps that endured through peacetime challenges and prepared to meet the trials of the coming Great War.
