A wandering journeyman known to everyone as Schlupps earned his nickname from a peculiar habit of declaring every mishap “Das ist mir Schlupps!”. He drifts from inn to inn, trading a quick grin and a handy skill for a modest stipend, always ready with a joke when a master refuses to pay. Though his real name, Heinz, has faded from memory, his reputation for clever tricks and quick wit spreads faster than any official record.
When a miserly master finally puts him to work in a cramped workshop, Schlupps is tasked with carving a simple bench—yet he soon discovers a hidden secret: a golden foot tucked away in the master’s chest. Spotting the gleam, he hatches a plan, swapping the ordinary wood for the precious piece to finish the bench in a flash. His impromptu solution promises a surprising turn for the upcoming Sunday service, where the finished work will take a very public ride.

A German storyteller from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she wrote with a playful, folktale-like spirit. She is also recorded under the names Clara Fromberg and Klara Rosenstock, a clue to a life that survives today mostly through bibliographic traces.
