Description

A curious schoolboy with a passion for languages finds an unlikely mentor in the town’s eccentric tailor, Andrew Spurling. Spurling, a lifelong polyglot, urges the boy to abandon the familiar classics and dive into Arabic, promising new horizons and deeper understanding of distant cultures. Their lively exchanges about ancient texts and distant lands set the stage for an adventure that will test both mind and spirit.

When youthful eagerness carries him onto a merchant brig bound for the African coast, a sudden storm capsizes the vessel, leaving him and a handful of crew adrift on a makeshift raft. Their desperate drift across the Atlantic brings them to an unfamiliar shoreline, where survival depends on the very linguistic skills the tailor prized. As they grapple with the harsh desert beyond the sea, the boy’s newfound knowledge becomes a crucial lifeline, hinting at further trials and discoveries.
