Description

This volume gathers a poet’s first twenty‑three years of work, presenting verses that move from tender love scenes to the rhythmic chants of field hands. The pieces were first published between the mid‑1880s and the turn of the century, capturing the changing moods of a rural society that was both rooted in tradition and feeling the stir of modern ideas.

Organised mainly in the order they were written, the collection lets listeners follow the writer’s evolving voice. Early experimental poems sit alongside later, more confident pieces, while a handful of previously unpublished drafts reveal the raw energy that shaped later successes. Themes of farm life, the seasons, and the struggles of laborers appear side by side with reflections on nature’s beauty and quiet moments of personal yearning.

Accompanying notes give clues about when each poem was finished, adding a subtle documentary feel. As the verses unfold, the listener can hear the cadence of turn‑of‑the‑century Danish speech, a lyrical portrait of a world both familiar and now distant.
