Description

In the quiet fishing village of Yelton, the evenings are scented with sea‑salt and blooming roses, and the modest cottages lean against the Atlantic’s cool breezes. At the heart of this picture is Salome Petherick, a fourteen‑year‑old girl whose bright voice carries over the dim church and whose crutches are as much a part of her as her determination. Living with her widowed father, Josiah, Salome tends the garden and the household with a steadfast sense of duty, even as the village watches the man she loves struggle with the lure of the local inn’s wine.

When the vicar, Mr. Amyatt, stops by her garden gate, their conversation hints at the fragile balance between hope and hardship that defines Salome’s world. As the sun sets behind Greystone, the young heroine faces the uneasy anticipation of her father’s return from the “Crab and Cockle,” setting the stage for a summer of quiet courage, unexpected friendships, and the gentle fight to keep her family’s spirit afloat.
