A chance encounter on a winter train brings the narrator face‑to‑face with Aatami Kuuskoski, the larger‑than‑life figure whispered about in their hometown. Kuuskoski’s lingering smile and the thick manuscript he produces on the spot hint at a man who has lived many roles and collected stories as densely as the pages he carries. The meeting sets a tone of quiet admiration mixed with curiosity about the paths that led this once‑unknown farmer’s son to the world’s stage.
The narrative traces Kuuskoski’s journey from a rambunctious schoolboy expelled for mischief, through his years at the catechism school where he first handled responsibility, to his ascent as a respected “tukko‑herr” in the forest camps. He marries, works as a life‑insurance agent, serves in the freedom war and earns a distinguished cross, before turning to poetry—a field that proves as rugged and thorn‑laden as his earlier exploits. Along the way he dabbles in public service, film, and consulting, gathering friendships with other artists while struggling to find his voice amid the clamor of his many titles.

A Finnish priest-novelist who helped bring Lapland into modern Finnish literature, he wrote vivid stories shaped by northern landscapes, Sámi themes, and a restless, eventful life. Popular in the 1910s through 1930s, he was especially known for fiction that made the far north feel immediate and alive.
