Description

A tender portrait unfolds in the first pages, following a fragile boy born in the bustling port of Antwerp in 1812. Though his first years are marked by illness and a prognosis that he might not survive past childhood, his mother fills his bedside with vivid tales, while his father introduces him to a hidden trove of discarded books. The cheap volumes, rescued from shipyards and old stalls, become his gateway to distant adventures, and the boy’s mind enlarges even as his body weakens.

As the family adapts to shifting fortunes after Napoleon’s fall, the young Hendrik discovers the charm of street puppeteers and the quiet allure of the countryside when they relocate to a modest wooden cottage called the “Green Corner.” Surrounded by nature’s rhythms and the whispers of local legends, his imagination blossoms, laying the groundwork for the storytelling that will later captivate a nation. The narrative invites listeners to linger in this formative world, feeling the warmth of a mother’s stories and the glow of a boy’s first literary awakenings.
