In a windswept New Zealand fiord, a small band of sealers and gold‑prospectors pause their routine to investigate a flash of wings that rides the evening storm. Their curiosity turns grim when they haul a strange, still‑breathing stranger from the water—a man wrapped in translucent cloth, unharmed by bullets but seemingly rescued from drowning. The men tend his wounds, coaxing life back into his lungs as the first light of dawn begins to creep over the cliffs.
While the newcomer recovers, the crew discovers odd, feather‑like fans drifting among the rocks, their delicate, weightless material hinting at something beyond ordinary wildlife. Amid the rugged landscape of towering precipices, kea cries, and the distant rumble of avalanches, the narrator reflects on the solitude of this remote world and the promise of hidden gold beneath the sand. The scene sets a tone of mystery and quiet awe, inviting listeners to follow the strangers’ intertwined fates in this isolated archipelago.
