Description

The story opens on a sun‑lit June day as two old friends return to the tidal marshes of the Tantramar. Will Carter, fresh from college, still carries the quiet confidence of a small‑town hero, while his companion Reuben Dare is a sturdy, thoughtful youth determined to build a boat for his ailing mother. Together they walk past birch‑lined dikes and fishing shadboats, their conversation turning the landscape into a backdrop for dreams of independence.

Reuben’s ambition to finish the shad‑boat before the next fishing season becomes the thread that pulls the community together, from the modest carpenter Chris Boltenhouse to the weather‑worn marsh‑folk who watch from the dikes. As the boys test the vessel on Wood Creek, old rivalries surface and the promise of a better future for Reuben’s widowed mother hangs in the balance. The tale captures a summer of hard work, quiet heroism, and the rhythm of a place where land and water shape every decision.
