Description

The story opens as a sturdy ship slips down the Elbe, leaving the familiar banks of Germany behind. Tension ripples among the crew, from quarrels in the galley to a near‑collision in a crowded fog. A sudden storm throws the vessel into a night of terror, the deck heaving and a cabin boy clinging to his post as waves crash over the rail. When the tempest finally eases, the crew is left to assess the damage and their shaken nerves, setting the tone for an arduous journey ahead.

Soon the vessel joins the restless currents of the North Atlantic, battling fickle winds and eerie calms that leave the sails listless. The narrative drifts through stops at Madeira and the Cape Verde islands, where language barriers spark colourful disagreements and the scent of exotic spices fills the air. Among the rigging, sailors trade stories of flying fish, futile harpoons, and the occasional shark caught in a net, while the ship’s log records the everyday dramas of life at sea. The opening chapters blend raw danger with fleeting moments of wonder, inviting listeners to feel the creak of the hull and the salty breath of a world just beyond the horizon.
