A weary cavalryman finds himself alone on a wind‑swept hill after a day of scouting in a remote African landscape. The night is cold and the sky is black, offering no stars, while a small fire flickers on the rocky outcrop he has chosen as a makeshift camp. He has been sent to report on supplies, but the ruins of a burned settlement and the silence of the surrounding grasslands leave him uneasy. With his rifle at his side and a thin blanket tied to his hat, he settles in, hoping the glow will guide his comrades back.
As the fire crackles, he listens for any sign of friendly voices, yet only the rustle of dry twigs and a distant wind break the stillness. The memory of nearby villages destroyed by colonial troops haunts him, and faint rumors of wild antelopes—or worse—loom in his mind. He watches the flames, feeling both the chill of the night seep into his bones and a quiet resolve to stay vigilant. The hour grows late, and he clings to the hope that dawn will bring rescue and a chance to move on from this isolated night.
