Description

In the waning years of the 19th‑century Austro‑Hungarian world, two young brothers—once snatched from their mother’s side and shipped to Vienna— find themselves thrust into a bewildering aristocratic milieu. Under the watchful eye of a demanding court master, they are groomed to bear the title of count, receiving a rigorous education that blends swordplay, horsemanship and an arcane system of examinations laden with strange instruments and moral penalties. Their daily life is a tapestry of opulent halls, strict protocols, and a relentless pressure to master both the arts of war and the subtleties of courtly etiquette.

Against this backdrop, the brothers grapple with their own identities: the elder, a diligent student at a German academy, and the younger, rooted in the bustling streets of Vienna. While their mother lives cloistered in a convent, the boys navigate a world where political intrigue, cultural displacement, and the weight of noble expectation collide, shaping a compelling portrait of youth caught between duty and desire.

Mór Jókai

1825–1904

A towering figure in 19th-century Hungarian literature, he wrote sweeping, adventurous novels and plays that made him one of his country’s most beloved storytellers. His life was just as dramatic as his fiction, shaped by politics, journalism, and the revolutionary spirit of 1848.
