Description

On a long, wintry night before Christmas, the dim light of a low sun seeped into Suutari‑Elkko’s cramped workshop. Ten‑year‑old Aappo sits on a side bench, watching the cobbler stitch long‑lasting boots while the cold wind rattles the shutters. The door swings open and a ragged, fur‑covered boy stumbles in, his clothes as dark as a fresh‑cut pine forest, and the other children gasp, calling him “Räisäspoika.”

Elkko sets aside his tools and begins to spin tales of daring thieves who slip through the shadows of villages and cities, stealing from the rich and vanishing like mist. The newcomer leans in, eyes wide, and his imagination carries him across bleak wildernesses, secret hideouts and silent towns, where he both admires the cleverness of the outlaws and recoils at the cruelty of their crimes. As the stories unfold, a restless yearning stirs within him, hinting at a future where his own choices may echo the legends he so vividly envisions.
