Description

In late June 1857 a modest narrator joins two eager companions—a meticulous naturalist and an artist‑turned‑amateur collector—for a leisurely trek across the rolling plains of central France. The trio sets out with simple provisions, the naturalist intent on chasing elusive chrysalides while the artist, nicknamed Amyntas, seeks the perfect butterfly to add to his prized collection. Their camaraderie is light‑hearted, each adopting whimsical names that reflect their scholarly obsessions.

As they wander through fertile undulations, shaded woods, and open meadows, the landscape unfolds in broad, melancholic blues and vibrant greens. Suddenly the path descends toward a dramatic gorge where the Creuse river rushes through a steep, white‑rocked canyon, forming a striking horseshoe‑shaped pool against a fertile mound. The scene captivates the travelers, offering a sudden, breathtaking tableau that blends the wild vigor of the water with the serene contours of the surrounding cliffs, promising further discoveries in this picturesque countryside.
