A candid, week‑by‑week chronicle from the front lines of the 1880 Kandahar campaign, this journal was written by a British brigadier‑general for his wife and children. He begins with the long trek from Bombay, describing the rugged landscape, the bustling markets of the towns he passes, and the simple pleasures of daily rides through orchards that let him and his family picture his adventures from home.
When the campaign turns grim after the devastating loss at Maiwand, his entries shift to the stark realities of a dwindling force holding a precarious position near Kandahar. He records the growing tension, the strain on the soldiers, and the desperate measures taken to sustain the garrison as the city braces for siege. The narrative offers a personal glimpse into military life, duty, and the emotional weight of a father trying to convey his experience to those he loves most.
