A weary traveler finds himself drawn to the isolated estate of Prince Zaleski, a once‑renowned ruler now living in self‑imposed exile. The palace looms like a forgotten ruin, its broken marble steps and echoing corridors swallowed by shadowed woods. As the sun fades, the narrator slips through a grand, decaying doorway into a world that feels both tomb and sanctuary, a place where time seems to have stalled.
Inside, the prince’s chambers are a dazzling chaos of artifacts: ancient tools, exotic statues, glittering manuscripts, and a lone organ whose low tones reverberate among the relics. A fragrant haze of incense and herbs hangs heavy in the air, while violet, scarlet and rose light flickers from mosaic lamps. Zaleski reclines amid this curated madness, a brilliant but tormented mind surrounded by the remnants of countless cultures, inviting the visitor—and the listener—to wonder what knowledge and longing have driven him to such a solitary, enigmatic refuge.

A master of decadent, high-voltage fiction, this British writer of Caribbean origin helped shape early science fiction, supernatural horror, and detective adventure. Best known today for The Purple Cloud, he wrote with a feverish imagination and a style that still feels strange and vivid.
