ASYLUM POEMS
This volume brings together over two thousand poems by a once‑overlooked 19th‑century English poet, presenting a sweeping portrait of his creative evolution. Roughly two‑thirds of the verses have never been printed before, and ninety of those appear here for the first time, marked with asterisks. The collection follows a roughly chronological order, ranging from early juvenilia to later works composed during his years in an asylum, offering a rare glimpse into how his voice shifted with experience and circumstance.
The editors have taken great care to restore original spellings, punctuation, and omitted stanzas, while also providing titles where manuscripts were untitled. Accompanying notes explain the challenges of dating many pieces and the decisions behind textual restoration. For listeners, the anthology not only showcases the poet’s lyrical range—from bucolic reveries to stark introspection—but also invites reflection on the personal and historical forces that shaped his remarkable output.

Known for vivid, deeply felt poems about rural life, nature, and common people, this English poet wrote with unusual closeness to the countryside he knew from childhood. His work was admired early on, then rediscovered later as readers came to value its honesty, musical language, and sharp eye for the changing landscape.
