The boarders argue over jazz, radio programs, and the supposed decline of modern life, while Miss Maria Bascom tries to keep order among professors, teachers, businessmen, stenographers, and artists. At the center of this lively household is Douglas Raymond, a warm-hearted baritone whose popularity may prove less comfortable than it sounds.

Douglas is preparing to sing with the local radio quartet, accompanied by pianist Dora Perkins, but the attention of several people around him makes even an ordinary farewell unexpectedly charged. Kitty Granby’s studied indifference, Dora’s knowing smile, and the boarders’ constant commentary hint at friendships and romances that are not as simple as they appear.
