The story opens in a sun‑drenched Savonian field, where the everyday chatter revolves around two humble staples: piimälasku, the thick cultured milk, and kokkelpiimä, the sweetened cream. Through lively, dialect‑rich narration the reader gets a taste of the region’s humor, its stubborn yet generous characters, and the simple rituals that bind them. The narrator humorously likens the process of making these foods to a small, communal ceremony, turning a kitchen task into a celebration of local identity.
Soon the narrator sets out from the farm, intent on tracing the flavors back to their source. Along the way he meets a gruff yet tender‑hearted magistrate, a laconic priest, and a bustling shopkeeper, each offering their own version of the prized drinks and a slice of village gossip. The tone stays light, inviting listeners to picture steaming pots, clinking mugs, and the warm glow of a sauna, while hinting at a larger journey that promises both nostalgia and gentle mischief.
