A Finnish writer, journalist, and farmer who brought the Savonian dialect vividly onto the page, he also took part in public life as a representative in the Finnish Diet. His work is closely tied to rural life in Rautalampi and to the local speech and character of eastern Finland.

Born Kaarlo Herman Tiihonen in Rautalampi on October 7, 1858, he wrote under the name Kaarlo Hemmo. He is described in reliable Finnish sources as a farmer, journalist, member of the Diet, and author, and he died in Rautalampi on February 4, 1940.
Hemmo is especially remembered as a dialect writer from the Haapasalmi manor area by Etelä-Konnevesi. Local museum material says he was known for using the Savonian dialect fluently and for helping make it better known, while also being active in public affairs.
His writing included poetry and other literary work, and several of his books have been preserved in digital form through Project Gutenberg. That combination of local speech, rural background, and civic involvement gives his work a strong sense of place and makes him an interesting voice in older Finnish literature.
