Description

A modest sloop named the Crystal Spring slides out of a quiet cove, its black‑painted hull and patchy sail hinting at many miles of hard work rather than sleek speed. At the helm is sixteen‑year‑old Jack Herrick, a weather‑tanned youth with freckled skin, brown hair tussled by sea breezes, and a habit of whistling half‑tunes as he scans the horizon. The story opens on a late‑June morning, with the lighthouse keeper—Jack’s distant uncle—waving from the shore and a lone fisherman casting lines along the breakwater, painting a vivid picture of coastal life.

Jack’s simple attire and bare feet on the tiller underscore his connection to the sea, while the slow, deliberate pace of the boat reflects his patient, observant nature. As he steers toward the harbor, the quiet routine of the harbor town begins to stir, promising small adventures and the camaraderie of three unlikely partners who will soon find themselves bound by circumstance.
