ΤΑ ΤΥΦΛΟΠΟΝΤΙΚΑ
In a remote Greek village, a priest’s marriage teeters on the edge of silence. His wife, the “παπαδιά,” is haunted by a dream of a collapsing home and a foreboding death, yet the priest brushes her pleas aside, urging her to keep the bread on the table and stay quiet. Their strained exchanges unfold against a backdrop of harsh winter mornings, where the rhythm of daily chores collides with the weight of unspoken fears.
The priest, known as Παπαβασίλης, roams four villages on a rotating schedule, preaching to a people eager for his guidance. One dawn he drives a team of six horses across a stubble‑filled field, shouting “Άπλα!” as the animals thunder forward, the sun striking the sweat‑shimmering terrain. His fierce energy and restless voice contrast sharply with the quiet desperation of his home life, setting the stage for a tale of stubborn devotion, lingering hopes, and the tangled memories of loves that once were.

A leading voice in modern Greek prose, he turned the everyday lives of villagers and sailors into vivid, memorable fiction. His work is closely linked with literary naturalism and with a sharp, humane eye for ordinary people.
