Set against the mist‑shrouded hills and reed‑lined shore of Teerijärvi, the story follows the quiet rhythms of a farmstead at the edge of a pine‑covered wilderness. Young Pekka, a lifelong farmhand, is finally granted a modest plot of land as a reward for years of service, while his companion Kerttu adjusts to a new home with her beloved calf Pulmikki. As summer unfolds, the pair prepare for the annual hay‑cut, their days filled with the sound of axes, the scrape of a plow, and the soft bleating of cattle under a bright, July sky.
A curious three‑year‑old girl named Mimmi wanders the fields, her wide eyes reflecting the sparkle of lake water and the bustle of passing fishermen, adding a touch of wonder to the hard work. When a sudden thunderstorm gathers on the horizon, Pekka and Kerttu race against the clouds, gathering the driest stalks before the rain can soak the meadow. The narrative captures the blend of duty, nature’s moods, and the simple pleasures that bind the characters to their land.

Raised in rural Kainuu and largely self-educated, this Finnish folk writer turned hard experience into plainspoken stories that brought everyday life to the page. His work also helped preserve oral tradition, including charms, poems, and local lore from eastern Finland.
