Description

Nestled on a gentle slope beside Kalliojärvi, the Pietola farm spreads across pine‑covered ridges, a lichen‑blanketed hill and a quiet, stony shoreline. A modest wooden house, a small barn, a weathered shed and a peat‑roofed sauna form the core of this isolated world, while the surrounding woods and a winding stream whisper of the seasons that shape daily life.

At the heart of the homestead lives Pieto, his wife Liisa, and their nine daughters—Reeta, the eldest, followed by twins Kerttu and Auno, then Sanna and Vappu, and the younger sisters Katri, Saara and Martta. The children’s chores blend with the rhythm of the land: milking, tending the garden, and weaving stories while the parents grapple with the hardships of a harsh winter and the longing for a son. Their conversations, tinged with humor and resignation, reveal a family bound by love, labor, and the quiet resilience of rural existence.
