Description

Set against the storm‑tossed coast of 17th‑century Ireland, the story opens at the crumbling remains of Castle Davenant. Once a stronghold of Norman knights, the fortress now lies in ruins after Cromwell’s artillery reduced it to a smoking heap. The surviving Davenant family—Mrs. Davenant, her son Fergus, his wife Katherine, and their boys Walter and Godfrey—have been forced to rebuild their lives on a narrow strip of land that survived a bitter confiscation.

When news arrives that the new Protestant king William is advancing on Dublin, the young brothers are thrust into a conflict that divides neighbour against neighbour. Walter, eager to prove himself, joins a local militia while Godfrey is sent on a dangerous errand that takes him deep into hostile territory. Their loyalties, family ties, and the very future of the Irish countryside are tested as the first battles of the Williamite War unfold.
