Description

This volume gathers a selection of Alexandre Herculano’s unpublished essays and official papers, offering a glimpse into the restless spirit of mid‑nineteenth‑century Portugal. Written during a brief but hopeful period of government reform in 1851, the documents reveal Herculano’s ambition to modernise land ownership, easing the burden of ancient feudal ties through lease‑hold arrangements that would empower small farmers and curb the concentration of estates.

The second half of the collection turns to Herculano’s practical work as mayor of the newly created municipality of Belém between 1854 and 1856. Here he drafted reports to the government and the courts, and designed a “Agricultural Rescue Fund” aimed at supporting rural communities facing hardship. These writings illustrate the intertwining of scholarly insight and civic duty, shedding light on the challenges of implementing progressive policies in a rapidly changing Portuguese society.
