Description

The novel places you right in the dust‑raised years of 1867‑1869, when men with shovels and steel rails raced to stitch the United States together. Amid the endless plains, jagged mountains and arid deserts, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific crews push a colossal project forward, each mile a triumph of sheer will and ingenuity.

Through the eyes of two ordinary laborers, Terry Richards and George Stanton, the story captures the daily grind, bitter cold, sudden storms and the rough‑handed camaraderie that fuels the iron trail. Their friendships with surveyors, engineers, Irish “tarriers,” and even the occasional Native guide reveal a vivid cast of characters, while the constant threat of accident, illness and conflict keeps the pace lively. Listeners will feel the clang of rail spikes and the distant whistle of locomotives as the nation’s great railroad is forged, mile by painstaking mile.
