Set in a small Finnish village of the 1920s, the play follows Visuliini, a seasoned shopkeeper whose restless ambition drives him to chase new deals far beyond the town’s borders. As he prepares for a trip to fetch cheap imports from Germany, his son Niko and the boisterous shop assistant Eriika linger on the field, swapping jokes and half‑hearted schemes to keep the family business afloat. Their banter reveals a community caught between traditional commerce and the rising tide of cooperative stores, each character juggling pride, practicality, and a touch of mischief.
Around them, neighbours such as the friendly farmer Sake, the stern neighbor Eljas, and the crafty itinerant Räähkä‑Juuso add colour and conflict, offering sly advice and dubious opportunities. Their interactions paint a vivid portrait of rural life—full of humor, rivalry, and the uneasy hope that a fresh shipment or a clever ruse might finally bring prosperity to the struggling village market.

A prolific Finnish journalist and storyteller, this early 20th-century writer moved easily between novels, plays, children’s books, animal tales, and popular history. His work often draws on rural life and everyday society, with a mix of humor, drama, and plainspoken observation.
