Description

A modestly furnished study in Kuopio becomes a pressure cooker of pride, jealousy and quiet ambition. Doctor Teitti, a respected physician and poet, spends his days amidst piles of papers while his wife Martta prepares for a market trip, leaving the household in the capable hands of their maid‑turned‑confidante, Mari. Their routine is suddenly disturbed when Raninen, a brusque butcher with a gold‑plated cane, bursts in demanding the doctor’s attention.

Through Mari’s inner commentary we glimpse a world where the everyday chores of cleaning and note‑taking hide a yearning to be part of the literary circle that once haunted the room. The clash of personalities—Raninen’s blunt authority, the doctor’s gentle intellect, and the servant’s simmering envy—creates a lively, almost theatrical tension that promises both humor and subtle social commentary, all set against the backdrop of a late‑19th‑century Finnish home.
