Joel Latham wakes up on the dank edge of a swamp on Venusport, his head pounding from a brutal tsith withdrawal. Once a celebrated spaceman, he now drifts from planet to planet, chasing the fleeting high that the illegal drug promises. The harsh sunrise and the humming ionic field force him to confront his shattered state and the dangers that lurk in the alien marsh.
A gaunt Martian hound, also ravaged by the drug, stumbles into view, offering a bleak camaraderie that hints at a shared past of reckless bets and busted credits. Through terse dialogue, Latham recalls flashbacks of his life hopping between Callisto, Mars, Ganymede, and the glittering pleasure yachts of Turibek, each stop leaving a deeper scar. With his mind fogged and his body on the brink, he must decide whether to claw his way back to sanity or surrender to the swamp’s dark pull.

A lively figure from the early science fiction scene, this writer is best remembered for collaborating with Ray Bradbury on Bradbury’s first professionally published story. His own work ranged from pulp-era adventures to later novels, with a knack for big ideas and classic magazine-style imagination.
