Relentlessly, a narrative as old as time drives forward to a climax as old as man—and points a finger as grim as Death.
In a harsh, prehistoric valley where danger and hunger dictate every moment, a young hunter named Gral lives under the stern rule of the Old One, Gor‑wah. Survival depends on relentless obedience: the strongest bring food, the weak watch and wait. Gral, the smallest of the males, struggles to prove his worth, hunting wild dogs and lizards with crude tools while the tribe’s expectations loom like the looming cliffs above.
One thaw‑filled day Gral discovers a secluded rock cleft warmed by the sun, a rare pocket of comfort amid the relentless cold. He settles there, gathering leaves and savoring the fleeting peace, when a massive bear—Obe the Great—suddenly appears, its amber eyes fixed on the tiny shaft Gral has left behind. The encounter forces the young hunter into a sudden, instinctive clash, testing his courage and skill far beyond the ordinary trials of his daily life.

A lively figure from the early science fiction scene, this writer is best remembered for collaborating with Ray Bradbury on Bradbury’s first professionally published story. His own work ranged from pulp-era adventures to later novels, with a knack for big ideas and classic magazine-style imagination.
