Description

Oliver Bright has just left the comforts of school and a quiet New England life, but duty calls him westward. His ailing father owns a share in a hidden mine, and the earnest youth resolves to claim what is rightfully theirs. With little travel experience, he boards a steamship for the Isthmus of Panama, then rides horseback into California’s untamed interior, confronting jungle heat, restless seas, and the kind of strangers who trade in rumors and half‑truths.

Along the way, Oliver meets colorful characters—a seasoned explorer, a gruff foreman, and a mysterious guide—each offering aid or warning as the journey grows more perilous. Storms lash the coast, the rugged terrain tests his resolve, and the shadows of the mining districts loom large. Yet his firm morals and unyielding spirit keep him moving forward, hinting that the treasure he seeks may be matched only by the adventure that shapes him.
