SOPHOKLES.
A child abandoned on a mountain is rescued and raised as the son of a Corinthian king, unaware of his true lineage. Driven by a restless need to know where he comes from, he journeys to the Oracle, receives a cryptic warning, and unwittingly fulfills it by slaying his biological father on the road. Returning to Thebes, he confronts the monstrous Sphinx that has been strangling the city, solves her riddle, and is hailed as savior; the grateful queen offers him both her hand and the throne, and Oedipus becomes ruler of the city he has just rescued.
Years of peace bring four children, but the gods grow displeased and a terrible plague grips Thebes, threatening the very foundations of the kingdom. The suffering people look to their king for a remedy, and Oedipus, determined to end the curse, sends his brother‑in‑law Creon to Delphi to seek Apollo’s counsel. As the delegation departs, tension hangs over the palace, hinting at revelations that could upend everything the new king believes about his past and his city.

One of the great tragedians of classical Athens, he helped shape the art of drama with plays that still feel tense, human, and surprisingly modern. His surviving works include Antigone, Oedipus Rex, and Philoctetes.
