In the aftermath of a bitter civil war, the royal house of Thebes stands on a razor‑thin edge. The new ruler has issued a rigid edict forbidding the burial of one of the fallen princes, fearing that any tribute might spark further rebellion. Yet the city’s grieving citizens whisper of ancient customs that demand proper rites for the dead, and a young woman feels the pull of family loyalty far stronger than the king’s law.
Defying the decree, she decides to lay her brother to rest, fully aware that the act could bring the harshest punishment. The king, steadfast in his belief that order must trump personal sentiment, confronts her with an unyielding sense of justice. Their clash erupts into a moral showdown that raises urgent questions about the limits of authority, the power of conscience, and the price of dissent—issues that still echo in today’s world.

One of the great tragedians of classical Athens, he helped shape the art of drama with plays that still feel tense, human, and surprisingly modern. His surviving works include Antigone, Oedipus Rex, and Philoctetes.
