Description

Set in the bustling Victorian town of Micklethwayte, the story opens amidst the lively chorus of St. Ambrose’s choir, where a cast of earnest townspeople—mechanics, clergy, and eager children—converge under the watchful eye of a diligent vicar. The town throbs with industry, from the thriving umbrella factory to the newly discovered healing springs, painting a portrait of progress and community ambition. At its heart is Nuttie, a spirited young girl whose imagination runs wild with dreams of grand museums, distant Alps, and far‑off wonders, even as the adults around her argue over modest outings to South Beach or Monks Horton.

Through Nuttie's bright eyes we glimpse the tension between tradition and the promise of a changing world, as the vicar, local businessmen, and choir members each push for their own vision of the town’s future. As the summer heat wanes, the choir rehearsals become a backdrop for whispered hopes, quiet rivalries, and the first stirrings of a mystery that will test loyalties and reshape relationships. Listeners are invited to follow Nuttie's journey from the churchyard toward the wider horizons that beckon beyond Micklethwayte.
