LA GUIDA
In the rugged valleys of the Aosta region, a young carriage driver named Giacomo makes his living on the treacherous mountain road that links remote villages. Each night he hoists a sack of oats, climbs onto the platform, and guides his four spirited horses through narrow passes, rain‑soaked streams and icy winters. The route is a relentless climb by day and a swift descent by night, and in three years Giacomo’s skill has kept every wheel intact, earning him a reputation that echoes through every tavern and chapel.
Beyond his deft handling of the rig, Giacomo is a lively, quick‑witted figure who greets peasants, priests, merchants and wandering minstrels with a sharp “crac” that has become a local greeting. He weaves news, jokes and whispered promises into brief pauses in his journey, making each stop feel like a personal encounter. As the seasons change, his bond with the white mare Forca and the red stallion Rancio deepens, hinting at further adventures that will test his loyalty to the valley and its people.

Best known as one of the writers behind Puccini’s great operas, he was also a major Italian playwright whose work brought everyday emotions and sharp observation to the stage. Trained in law but drawn to literature, he helped shape both modern drama and some of opera’s most enduring stories.
