Description

Set against the backdrop of Philip II’s Spain in 1595, the story opens amid a tangled web of ambition and desire. The marquis, newly freed from a scandalous liaison, finds himself pursued by Violante, a charismatic courtesan whose fortunes have long depended on the gifts of powerful lovers. When a jealous comendador intervenes, the delicate balance of secrecy unravels, and a series of desperate letters and intercepted messages fuel a tense cat‑and‑mouse game.

Violante, facing abandonment by both the marquis and a ruthless rival, discovers she is pregnant and must act quickly to secure her future. She converts her remaining jewels into cash, hides the money, and retreats to a modest room near the marquis’s estate, trading opulent banquets for quiet prayers. Her transformation from celebrated courtesan to a solitary figure cloaked in humility hints at the further trials awaiting her in a court where loyalty is as fickle as fashion.

Patricio de la Escosura

1807–1878

A restless figure of Spanish Romanticism, he moved between literature, journalism, politics, and public life. His work reflects both the drama of the 19th century and a writer’s taste for history, theater, and big ideas.
