Set against the rugged sierra of Andalusia in the year 1595, the tale follows a wandering horseman who has left the flatlands of La Mancha for the greener, stone‑crowned hills of southern Spain. The narrator sketches the countryside in vivid detail: thriving olive groves, wind‑whipped encinas, and the crumbling Moorish fortresses that still dot the valleys, all under the long shadow of Philip II’s reign. As he rides his long‑haired mount along narrow paths once carved for goats, the scenery shifts from sun‑lit ridges to a low, mineral‑rich stream flanked by rosemary and oleander.
The journey soon takes a turn when the traveler spots the faint sound of another rider approaching through a narrow canyon. The sudden presence hints at hidden dangers that may lurk among the ancient ruins and winding tracks. Between the beauty of the landscape and the uneasy whisper of unseen footsteps, the story invites listeners to imagine the fragile balance between curiosity and caution in a world still echoing with the legacies of conquest.
