In ancient Babylon, a powerful ruler who has just secured two sieges of Jerusalem revels in his victories, convinced that his might places him above the gods. His confidence swells into arrogance, and he begins to see himself as the ultimate authority over fate and faith. The narrative follows his relentless pursuit of glory, painting a vivid portrait of a king whose ambition knows no bounds.
But the gods have a different plan. A sudden divine punishment shatters his certainty, driving him into madness that forces him to wander the wild forests as a broken man. Stripped of his former power, he struggles to reclaim his sanity in the shadow of his former empire, offering a stark meditation on the limits of human pride. The poem uses his tragic fall to warn against the seductive lure of militarism and unchecked authority.

Best known for writing the libretti for Giacomo Puccini’s first two operas, he moved easily between poetry, journalism, and the theater. His work also placed him within Milan’s lively Scapigliatura circle, where literature and social criticism often went hand in hand.
