Description

Set against the glittering yet shadowed streets of early‑nineteenth‑century Paris, the story opens with a determined widow, Sarah Seyton, whose ambition is to secure a royal marriage for herself—or for those she can manipulate. With the aid of her brother Tom, a meticulous planner, she surveys a litany of young princes from the Almanach de Gotha, zeroing in on the naïve Grand‑Duke Maximilian Rudolph of Gerolstein, believing his youth will make him pliable. Their scheming is further buoyed by the cunning Dr. Polidori, whose own designs on power intertwine with the Seytons’ restless machinations.

The narrative then follows the covert courtship that spirals into a secret wedding, only to be shattered by an unforgiving duke who declares the union void. As alliances crumble and betrayals surface, the Countess—driven by ruthless ambition—employs deception and false grief, setting in motion a tangled web of intrigue that pulls a Parisian notary, a rogue, and a bewildered English baronet into her dangerous game. The stage is set for a maze of secrets and loyalties that will test every character’s resolve.
