Description

The novel opens with a weary cavalry unit emerging from bleak, wind‑swept moors into the lush, sun‑kissed valley of Cleeve, a landscape that feels both remote and richly atmospheric. Our narrator, a gentleman‑soldier with a sharp eye for character, introduces a colorful cast of troopers—fierce De Brito, dashing Cornet Graham, and others—each defined by their own blend of bravado and vulnerability. As they pause at the foot of a stone‑capped manor, the promise of an inn and a new assignment hints at the tangled social intrigues awaiting them.

From this point the story rolls forward as the officer is drawn into the world of the eponymous lady of Cleeve, whose reputation for secrecy and influence quickly becomes a magnet for curiosity and danger. The prose balances vivid descriptions of Devonshire’s coastline and countryside with keen observations of class, honor, and the restless ambition of its characters. Listeners can expect a steady mix of adventurous travel, subtle romance, and the quiet tension that builds when personal loyalty meets hidden agendas.
