In the cold reaches of space, a battered freighter hovers at the edge of a treacherous hyperspatial corridor known as the Slot. Pilot Kelly, cocky and reckless, pushes the vessel into the drift while his uneasy partner Beliakoff frets over the delicate calculations and the missing expertise of their former astrogator, Kyne, now imprisoned for a violent outburst. Their banter masks a deeper anxiety: a single misstep could shatter the ship or strand them forever in the void.
Meanwhile, far from the ship, the militaristic regime of Mala claws at its own ambitions. General Drak, a flamboyant commander, wrestles with political rivals as the empire’s forces prepare for a looming clash with democratic allies. When Kelly’s careless generosity—handing out war manuals to the planet’s laborers—threatens to ignite unexpected resistance, the crew must decide whether to abort their risky jump or face the consequences of their unintended interference. The story balances tense space navigation with the fragile balance of power on a world teetering on the brink.

A sharp, underappreciated voice from mid-century science fiction, this writer earned lasting admiration for stories that were witty, inventive, and a little offbeat. Best known for the novella Bettyann, he built an early reputation in the magazines before largely stepping away from fiction.
