Description

The story opens on a bright, dewy morning at Mitchelfurst Place, where the village postman makes his familiar rounds along a sun‑kissed lane lined with holly and tangled brambles. He encounters a young gentleman, sharp‑profiled and impatient, who demands his letters despite the postman’s hesitation. Their terse exchange hints at a lingering tension that surrounds the grand, silent house at the end of the avenue, a place that seems to hold secrets older than the postman’s thirty‑year service.

Meanwhile, Barbara wrestles with a knot of anxiety as she prepares to meet Reynold, a man whose departure looms like a storm. She senses that a single conversation could mend or deepen the rift between them, yet she is unsure what to say. As the clock ticks and the gate stands open, the air is charged with the promise of words left unsent and feelings on the brink of revelation.
