Description

In this richly layered novel, the story unfolds around the Monfort family, a blend of English aristocracy and Jewish heritage that has taken root in a bustling American city. Reginald Monfort, an English gentleman, defied his own rigid social circle to marry a cultured, affluent Jewish woman, and together they build Monfort Hall, a house that becomes both sanctuary and stage for the generations that follow. Their daughter, Miriam, embodies the collision of two worlds, navigating the expectations of her lineage while confronting the isolation that comes with being a cultural bridge.

As the narrative moves forward, a mysterious nervous ailment begins to grip Miriam, puzzling the physicians of the era and casting a shadow over the household. The illness, coupled with an unsettling presence that seems to haunt the hall’s corridors, forces the family to confront hidden fears and unspoken histories. Against this backdrop of personal and societal tension, the novel explores how memory, identity, and the weight of legacy shape the lives of those who dwell within Monfort Hall.
