Arthur Seaton is a personable young Cambridge student with every advantage in life—and very little natural enthusiasm for study. Though destined for the Bar and expected to meet his tutor’s standards, he longs to exchange dusty books and oppressive summer heat for the open air of Dartmoor, where he spent his happiest childhood days among heather, granite tors, and wide, lonely hills.

His uncle’s invitation to Trematon Rectory offers the perfect escape, yet Arthur is determined to remain at Cambridge a little longer and complete the work he has neglected. As he lingers near Trinity College, he notices a familiar young woman connected with a brilliant scholar recently struck down by illness.
